I got stuck on the hair for my main character a while back, and I have not been able to move past it. I decided to go for it and try out a couple of methods for hair.
First, I tried out the particle system method. While it is ok, I can't get any shape or work much with it. The hair looks like strands of pasta more than anything, combing does allow good coverage and I don't have control of the hair, which can be an issue since I am animating the model. I am not a big fan of it but it could work.
Next, I tried out the sculpting method. I've never tried out this method before and I was pretty pleased with the results. I have more control with the hair and I can add curves and dips and a more hair like structure that I can't with the particle system. It allows me to bring the more curly look that I am going for although it would require some maintenance and leg work. This isn't the final result of course, but I most liked how it looked in the back.
The last possible method is modeling-- this is old, reliable, and boring. I can't really do much to the hair, and modeling curls hasn't really worked out so well. If all else fails, I will turn to this method, however I truly am not a fan of it. This method holds the least texture and has no room for adding curls or anything interesting to the hair.
Overall, I was most pleased with the sculpting method, so that's probably what I am going to do. It makes the most sense in terms of the texture and aesthetic that I want to go for and allows me a greater deal of flexibility when dealing with the hair. There are still a few kinks to work out with it currently, but it looks like the way I'm going.
