Music can convey grand tales, experiences, and even singular emotions. In my experience, some of the best songs are those which leave an image in your head that represents what the artist is trying to convey. As such, I had the idea to try and recreate some of those images and make a series out of it. The idea came to me after listening to the song "Little Black Death" by Meg Myers and the stark image it paints.
In "Little Black Death", Meg Myers discusses how a traumatic experience at the hand of another has fundamentally changed and effectively "killed" a part of the narrator. She has several clever references throughout the song; for example, "Little Black Death" is a clever reference to the archetypal "Little black dress". Additionally, the phrase "petite mort", which is french for "little death" is repeated several times after each iteration of the chorus.
This is my first attempt and I think it has turned out ok, though I think I can improve it in the next version when I paint it and the line art got a bit messed up. While the feet got cut off in the scan, this is pretty much what I envision for the rest of the series. I have several ideas, such as a woman facing forward while a wave crashes on her for the song "Forever For Now" by LP. Or perhaps a man sitting on the edge of a building with his feet dangling and him staring off into the distance for the song "24 Floors" by The Maine. I intend to include small snippets of the lyrics which stand out to me in each piece.
Music is a pretty big part of my life: I've depended on it to get me through tough situations and I've used it to celebrate my victories. I think this series is a good way for me to get to mesh two of my loves, practice drawing and painting, and also convey a little bit of how my brain works.
