Marking Period 3 Review

Alaina has been focusing on still shots this year, and this marking period she decided to really hone in on the modeling side of things by creating a bathroom. Of all the shots she created, this one is easily my favorite: it carries great composition, a great color scheme, and some stellar modeling. I love the beveling and all the details she managed to include with the curves of the sink. The shot composition is really amazing: it has diagonal lines, points of emphasis, and a lighting scheme that draws our focus to the tap on the right. I really liked her idea of modeling a bathroom and her slight step away from fantasy. Although it does still have fantastical elements to it and she is exploring haunted artworks, this piece really allows Alaina to work on improving her modeling, which is beautiful; I'd like to do that as well. I also really loved her color scheme of gold and green, I thought that the whole thing worked out beautifully and colors is usually something I need to work on.

This marking period, Bakshi continued with her method of mixing 3D and 2D art, and also made her first attempt at integrating text into her art. She's based her pieces off the art that she creates and also on her own emotions and experiences, which adds another layer to her work. I really love how her "It's all up for you to decide" piece turns out. It looks like a movie or a book poster. She employed a red and green color scheme throughout really well, and that's hard to do without having it look like Christmas. She also used the principles of design really well, and I love the though and meticulousness that went into her piece. Even though Bakshi has established what she wants to do and the method in which she wants to do it in, she is continuing to branch out and experiment with her artwork. She is continuously expanding her skill set, and I really admire that.

Caden made a lofi music video for the local artist Sourface, who is a friend of his. I think his video was a success: it accurately reflects the nature of the music and the artist and is also immensely enjoying to watch. He had an a great variety of shots and alternated them well; He also maintained a great color scheme throughout his video. However, what I really loved was his use of text. He alternated fonts but and at certain points had a pause that highlighted the specific word, and it really worked great. The shot to the right was my favorite part of the video: I loved the pink text on the black and white background. It gives such a comic-esque aesthetic and I think its a great conclusion for the song (after, of course, that stellar clip with the shoe).

Sean made a video this marking period, and it turned out really well. We've only seen Sean's scripts up until this point, and it was awesome to see his incredible ideas brought to life. I loved the concept of the video, but I really focused on shot composition. I think film students do more with shot composition than modeling students do--not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'd like to work on shot composition as well. Sean's shots emphasize characters, emotions, plot, and even inherent messages. I would love that have that same meticulous shot work in my pieces because I think it elevates the whole piece and demonstrates great preparation.

Vivian finished up her animation and got started on some stills. We saw a little bit of her animation last marking period, and I really like how it has turned out. She put a lot of tiny details into it and it must have been extremely wearisome to rearrange the clothes and stuff for every shot, but it has a great effect. I especially loved her shape keys because they looked natural and very loose: nothing weirdly deformed and the emotions got across: that is something I am to replicate in my own work. She also made some stills based on her artwork that turned out really well. I really love her use of texture mapping and hair modeling. I really love the concept and the look of the piece, as well as the purple background.

I think this marking period saw some of my classmates' best works: maybe its because its our second year of this course and we all really got time to work during the third marking period, or maybe its because we all just got really motivated to give it our all this marking period. Regardless, I loved the art that was presented this marking period, and I'm really excited for district arts fest this year,.
