Printing Particle Systems

For NAHS, we could chose to be a part of art shop, where we can sell pieces of art and the proceeds go to NAHS. I chose to be a part of art shop, and am making 7 pieces. 4 of those are bookmarks, but the rest are art pieces based on a bird. I've made a sketch, a model, two renders of that model, and I am hoping to print the bird as well. While it would be fine without the feathers, I thought it might be better to try and figure out a way to print particle systems.
The main problem with trying to print particle systems, especially (or only?) when it's hair, is that there is no mesh to print, they're simply strings of vertices. You could try and modify those, but I did not find much success in that area. So, I looked around, and http://tgaw.com/wp/?p=548 opened my eyes to the possibility of setting the hair particle system to emit another object, one with mesh. So, I tried that, and in terms of make manifold, it seems to have worked. However, I don't know if it's big enough for me to be able to print it properly. That remains to be seen in simplify 3d.

As you can see,  I made a time lapse video. I probably should have included music or a voice over, but I didn't want to. Because there are so many tiny hairs on the object, it moves very slowly, and the file buffers a lot, but, as long as it doesn't crash on me too many times and I have a saved copy, I think I'll be fine. I don't plan on making the bird too big, especially since I can't even keep it.

These are some stills of the bird with the regular particle system, they're the ones I'm planning on selling for the art shop. I'll probably print them at Dickinson and hope I get them back in time, we'll see.
