End of Marking Period 3 Blogpost

Intention Definition & Exploration of Ideas:
This marking period, I really wanted to finish up my animation, and I worked towards that even though that's not exactly how it worked out. I really wanted to focus on the aesthetic of the entire animation, I had experimented with particles systems and was already doing the entire animation in cycles, so I decided focus more on how it looks. I also started branching out and working in photoshop and Adobe Character Animate because I want to experiment with 2D animation.
Planning:
As I was initially working on the entire animation, I reworked the storyboard and drew a more concrete one. As far as the models went, I wanted to add feathers to the phoenix and scales to the hippocampus. Additionally, I had come up with the idea of the mythical creatures series based on the curve model that I made freshman year and as such I wanted to incorporate that into the animation. So, I decide to make "coins" for the other two creatures as well. I also wanted to finish the animation this marking period so I could move on to 2D animation. So, I created the walk cycle for the wolf and the fly cycle for the phoenix.
Producing:
A lot changed in production this time around, while I started out intending to create a full-fledged
animation, that changed. I really did not want to go through with making the animation, I knew I could not complete that before the end of the year, and so, I went back to my original idea: the entire mythical creatures idea had started with me wanting to somehow make a 3D phoenix come out of the curve modeled phoenix that I had made, and so I adapted that idea. I gave the phoenix feathers when I went to Monroe Art Night as a demonstrator so I could make it less ugly, and I will do that for the hippocampus as well with scales instead of feathers. Additionally, I made the "coins" as I have come to refer to them, and I really like how they turned out; I also found that I enjoy curve modeling quite a bit. I've already animated and am in the process of rendering out the phoenix animation, and soon I'll have the other two done as well. On top of giving the phoenix feathers, I also have a trail of fire snaking through. While it does slow down the rendering process quite a bit, it makes the entire animation much more exciting. I also figured out how to animate a character with particle systems: you add the particle systems after your rig it, which is extremely simple, and I'm not sure how it works, but I'm going with it. On the 2D animation side, I worked in photoshop and created some pngs as practice. They turned out pretty well, considering they were my first tries, and I think I'm getting the hang of working with a mouse in photoshop. With a little more time, I can probably make consistent drawings and create something substantial. I also started working with Adobe Character Animator, and I found that it really is a useful program: it works by mapping the face of the user and allowing the person to control the facial features and mouth movements of the character. You can use a pre-made character, stylize a picture of either yourself or someone else, or create a character yourself in either illustrator or photoshop.

Furthermore, my friends came to me to film and edit a video of theirs for an extra credit opportunity for anatomy. We did it in the style of the "7 Rings" as that was what they modeled the song after. It was a new experience and I really enjoyed it; I normally only really do cross-dissolves and a few black videos for editing, but I did much more with it this time. I put a tint on the video, used a lot more transitions, and put on subtitles in what was probably a very inefficient way.

Evaluating:
While this marking period has not been my most productive, it certainly has been my most experimentational (not sure that's a word). I really got to branch out and try new things with my work, which is something I haven't done much this year. In terms of practicing and try out new things, I think I did well. The stuff I've done in photoshop is getting me pretty excited to do more stuff in it. I think I did well in terms of beginning things this marking period, and I'm looking forward to continuing through with improving on the projects I've started. Once again, however, time is not on my side, as it never is. Maybe one day I'll get everything that I want get done, done, but I do not think it's coming anytime soon. I didn't do a lot in terms of 3D printing this marking period, and I'm hoping to rectify that the next marking period.

Integrating:
I got to implement what I learned about particle systems this time, and the phoenix turned out really well because of that. I also will be able to use Adobe Character Animator in my final history project, which is very helpful considering it would probably have been impossible to do without it. I've also learned that trying to go through with a project when you don't actually want to do it will almost certainly turn out badly. Adapting and improving the situation is almost always what's best in these situations, and I'm happy that I got to learn that.
