We recently had winter break, over which I did mostly nothing with a dash of guilt for doing nothing. However, I did start on the last of the three mythical creatures in my series (the hippocampus) and I finished it this week. The end result is a bit rushed, but I'm satisfied with how it looks.
The hippocampus model overall turned out well, I was able to maintain a good topology, it isn't too high-poly even though I subdivided it, and it actually looks like a hippocampus, which is always a good thing. As always, I box-modeled it with a mirror modifier and then made adjustments as needed.
Of course, there were a fair amount of things that could have gone better, for instance, it is not the most beautiful of creatures to look at face-wise. The snout is too wide and the mouth is weirdly shaped; also, the eyes are slightly off-putting, but it think that could be attributed to a lack of eyelids.
Additionally, the color is not very organic, as I had to color it according to the rectangular faces. However, I decided to go with it and have fun, so the color is mostly random swatches of the same palette everywhere, which is what an actual greek hippocampus is like as well (plus, creative license comes into play more when it is a mythical creature).
However, I am pleased with the model's overall appearance, as well its iridescence. I think I was able to stay true to the general idea of the hippocampus as well as add my own style to it. Most of all, I finally have all my creatures for the series, and I can start working on the animation.
