End of Marking Period 2 Blogpost

Intention Definition and Exploration of Ideas: This marking period, I focused on furthering the

mythical creatures series that I had started working on in marking period 1. As the idea was simply

continued on from marking period 1, I did not get much of an opportunity to explore ideas. However,

I did delineate what exactly I wanted to happen in the animation and I experimented with certain

facets of the animation/modeling process.

Planning: I was originally planning on finishing the entire animation this marking period, however, with my earlier decision to make the creatures in cycles and blender render so as to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the model, the wolf took much longer that I intended, effectively cancelling my plans to finish the animation.

Still, I finished all the creatures. I also wanted to delineate some sort of storyboard or even a simple storyline for the animation. Producing: I started off with the wolf, box-modeling based on a reference image. The model didn’t take that long; however, I decided to experiment with hair, as I had been wanting to do for quite some time. As it was essentially my first time actually working with hair, it took me quite some time to get it quite right. Yet, the end result justified the extra work: the resulting render looked particularly good, and it had a look similar to the characters from the movie Isle of Dogs. It didn’t look quite as good in blender render, and I didn’t want to go back to the hairless wolf, so I made the decision to make the animation in cycles. I then made a rough storyboard delineating what would happen in the animation along with certain shots that I wanted to include. I was about to start on the hippocampus when Mr. Bomboy told me to print the wolf, and so I did. The wolf took three times as I wasn’t including proper support, but the final product turned out extremely well. I then moved on to the hippocampus, which didn’t take long at all.

Evaluating: I’m finding that I need better time management skills as this animation is taking longer than expected. However, the models look really good, and I enjoy being able to focus on them more. The hippocampus was extremely easy to make due to its lack of externalities. If I do want to maintain similar aesthetics with other work, I’ll either have to pick up the pace or prepare for a decreased work output. The wolf print taught me quite a bit about 3D printing: I learned how to properly support certain parts and how intricate I can get with my prints; I look forward to printing more models.

Integrating: As it pertains to integrating what I’ve learned this marking period, I have learned how to properly print models, the possibilities when it comes to cycles, and the intricacies of certain models versus others. I will also look to producing models and animations faster without compromising the integrity of the piece. I’m also considering printing more as it is something I enjoy quite a bit. Making the hair for the wolf probably taught me the most this marking period, and it really me up to particles systems, which is something I will look to trying more in the future.

I worked on this in November (I just joined the head and the body) for national portfolio day. It turned out really well and it will be extremely useful in many future animations.
