Phoenix: Process Page

I am continuing work on my mythical creatures project, and so far, I am fairly close to finishing the phoenix. It is turning out well, and I’m thinking of color palettes for all of the creatures. The phoenix is going to be, of course, majorly orange. However, I might throw in some purples, blues, whites, and yellows to depict the different temperatures of fire. The hippocampus is typically iridescent, which means I’m going to have high specularities; regardless, it will consist primarily of bright blues, greens, and purples. The wolf’s body will either be grey or white, and the color palette will consist of cold colors. I have this very prominent idea the eyes are going to be bright blue, something that gives it an ethereal feel.

Some elements that I am struggling with are the tail feathers and the eyes. Thanks to a video Mr. Bomboy sent my way, I have a fairly good idea of how I can model the eyes in a way that allows for me to animate the phoenix. As for the tail, I still don’t know how exactly I will go about that. As the phoenix is a mythical creature, it is hard to find references for it, especially something that gives me front and side views. I have been free-handing this entire time while looking at a single 3D-modeled phoenix. However, I think I might introduce a peacock reference into the mix and see how that goes. The two birds are anatomically similar, and while I won’t be putting peacock feathers on a phoenix, I can draw inspiration from it to create an interesting tail that adheres to armatures and still looks natural. I might also go back to my phoenix curve-model for some inspiration on the feathers.

Overall, the phoenix is going well, I’m happy with how it is turning out, and I will definitely be able to finish it this week. I’m still unsure as to whether I will make the creatures separate animations and then put them together into a series of sort or whether I’m making a giant animation containing all three of them, but that will come soon.
