Artists create when they have something to say, as such, their works contain certain meanings and are centered around specific themes. For this year, we are to choose certain themes that appeal to us, that we wish to work with. After some reflecting, I've narrowed it down to two major themes: Looking Inward and Politics and the Social Order.
Looking inward, as a theme in art, relates to emotions, mental illnesses, our experiences in childhood, our environment, and pretty much anything to do with our minds. The works that fall into this character usually depict self-reflection:

However, I want to focus more on a primal emotion that every human being experiences: anger. Anger has always been a problem for me, from a young age, I struggled with keeping my temper in check. I always said or did something in the heat of a moment and regretted it for days after. In recent years, I've been improving at staying calm. I know that many others struggle with this as well. Anger manifests itself in many forms, and while it usually carries a negative connotation, it can also be a force for good. For example, while anger has led to violence and the ending of relationships, it has also lead to people standing up for themselves. I want to keep that in mind and really explore the many aspects of anger. Additionally, when I was younger, I used to imagine my anger as a ball of fire, it would expand as I got angrier. Now, I imagine myself on an island with a "chasm" of anger around me, whenever I'm angry, I picture myself walking towards the center of the island, away from the chasm. I want to explore those representations and also ask others how they keep calm. Yet, I would not limit myself to anger, and I would also think about mental illnesses as a potential theme.
The other theme I want to explore is Politics and the Social Order. Things I would want to work on are based on my experience: I would want to create videos or pictures relating to discrimination and inequality. I would want to explore how the power dynamics in our relationships work. I would also want to create things relating to diseases and the differences between first-world and third-world countries. I would really try to encapsulate multiple experiences and perspectives, regardless of their differences to each other or from my own. While my ideas relating to this theme are not as developed as the other theme, I do think this theme also has a lot of potential and allows me more flexibility than the previous theme. Ultimately, both of themes have a lot of potential, and many interesting avenues. I would love to be able to execute ideas relating to either one of these themes, but I don't know what exactly I'll do yet. |
